WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump publicly criticized Interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro after she rejected his claim that the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall had been damaged by vandals, exposing an unusual public disagreement between the president and one of his own administration's top law enforcement officials.
The dispute began after Trump said the historic Reflecting Pool had suffered vandalism that required a major federal response. Speaking to reporters, he argued that acts of vandalism in the nation's capital reflected broader public safety concerns and justified tougher law enforcement measures.
Pirro, however, contradicted the president's account, telling reporters that investigators had found no evidence that the Reflecting Pool itself had been damaged by vandals. She said authorities had reviewed the incident and that available information did not support Trump's description of events.
