Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has condemned what he described as an “extremely vile” Russian drone attack on a critical nuclear-related facility near Chornobyl, warning that Moscow’s actions are becoming increasingly dangerous as diplomatic efforts continue.
According to Ukrainian officials, a Shahed drone struck a storage facility linked to spent nuclear fuel near the Chornobyl exclusion zone. The attack caused damage and a fire, which was later extinguished by emergency crews. Authorities and the International Atomic Energy Agency said radiation levels remained within normal limits and no injuries were reported.
Zelensky accused Russia of deliberately targeting sensitive nuclear infrastructure and called for stronger international action. The incident comes as Ukrainian officials prepare for important discussions in London focused on security, military assistance, and the future direction of the war.
The strike has renewed concerns about the safety of nuclear facilities in wartime, particularly around Chornobyl, the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster in 1986. International inspectors are expected to examine the damage in the coming days.
