The Ceasefire Illusion: Gaza, Lebanon and Iran Remain on Edge as Fighting Continues

by Shahnoor Saqib

Ceasefires were supposed to calm the Middle East. Instead, Gaza, Lebanon and Iran remain active conflict zones, raising growing questions about whether the word "ceasefire" still means what it once did.

In Gaza, Israeli operations continue despite the truce framework announced months ago. Israeli forces have expanded their control of territory while deadly strikes and clashes persist. Reconstruction efforts remain stalled, Hamas has not disarmed, and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians continue living in difficult humanitarian conditions.

Lebanon is facing a similar reality. Over the weekend, Israeli troops carried out their deepest incursion into southern Lebanon in more than two decades, while Hezbollah continued launching attacks. Even after new de-escalation announcements, military operations have continued on both sides of the border.

Meanwhile, hopes for a broader U.S.-Iran understanding remain fragile. Although both sides have discussed long-term arrangements, recent military exchanges and disputes linked to Lebanon and the Strait of Hormuz have complicated negotiations. Iran has also signaled frustration with ongoing regional escalation.

The result is a region caught in a dangerous gray zone — no official return to full-scale war, yet no lasting peace either. Across Gaza, Lebanon and Iran, ceasefires remain on paper while violence continues on the ground, leaving millions uncertain about what comes next.
