Trump Signs Iran Deal to End War as 14-Point Agreement Reshapes Middle East

U.S. President Donald Trump has formally signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran aimed at ending more than three months of conflict and reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The agreement launches a 60-day negotiating period for a broader settlement covering Iran's nuclear program, sanctions relief and regional security issues.

The 14-point agreement calls for the immediate cessation of hostilities, restoration of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports. It also establishes a mechanism to monitor compliance while negotiators work toward a permanent accord.

One of the most consequential provisions allows sanctions waivers for Iranian oil exports, potentially returning millions of barrels of crude to global markets. Oil prices have already fallen as traders anticipate increased supply and reduced disruption risks in the Gulf.

Under the framework, Iran reaffirms that it will not pursue nuclear weapons and agrees to cooperate with international monitoring of its enriched uranium program. However, several of the most contentious nuclear issues have been deferred to future negotiations, highlighting the temporary nature of the agreement.

The memorandum also includes provisions for unfreezing some Iranian assets and establishing a proposed $300 billion reconstruction and development fund, a move supporters say could help stabilize the region while critics argue it gives Tehran substantial economic benefits before a final agreement is reached.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies pass, is expected to reopen for commercial traffic under the agreement. Both sides now face a crucial 60-day window to transform the memorandum into a lasting peace settlement.
