Trump Defends Iran Peace Deal at G7, Says Tehran Will Never Have Nuclear Weapons
U.S. President Donald Trump has strongly defended the interim U.S.-Iran peace agreement during the G7 summit, arguing that the deal delivers the one outcome he considers most important: preventing Iran from ever obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Speaking alongside world leaders in France, Trump said the agreement states "loud and clear" that Tehran will not develop, acquire or possess nuclear weapons. He warned that Iran would face severe consequences if it violated those commitments.
"The only thing that really matters to me is Iran will never have a nuclear weapon," Trump said as he defended the framework agreement that was signed electronically ahead of a planned ceremony in Geneva.
Trump also rejected reports suggesting the United States could invest in Iran as part of the peace process, describing those claims as "ridiculous." He insisted the agreement focuses on nuclear restrictions, inspections and regional security rather than direct U.S. financial involvement.
The president's remarks came as questions continue to swirl around the unpublished 14-point framework agreement. The accord is expected to launch 60 days of intensive negotiations covering sanctions relief, uranium stockpiles, inspections and broader security issues.
Trump additionally criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over ongoing tensions in Lebanon, saying Israel must be "more responsible" as diplomats work to stabilize the region following the ceasefire framework.
While the White House portrays the agreement as a major diplomatic breakthrough, critics in Israel and some Western capitals remain skeptical about whether Iran will fully comply and whether the final negotiations can be completed within the proposed timeline.
