Trump Defends Iran Deal as Critics Attack Concessions to Tehran

President Donald Trump has mounted a strong defense of his administration's newly signed Iran agreement, dismissing critics who argue the deal grants excessive concessions to Tehran.

Speaking after the signing of the U.S.-Iran memorandum, Trump said opponents of the agreement were ignoring its economic and security benefits. He argued that reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending months of conflict helped avoid a major shock to global energy markets and the world economy.

The agreement establishes a ceasefire framework, restores maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, begins a 60-day negotiating process on Iran's nuclear program, and opens the door to sanctions relief and the release of some frozen Iranian assets.

Trump's critics, including some Republican lawmakers and pro-Israel voices, argue the deal falls short of earlier U.S. demands. They point to provisions allowing Iran to continue civilian uranium enrichment and the absence of immediate requirements to dismantle Tehran's ballistic missile program.

The president responded sharply, reportedly calling critics "fools" and "stupid," while insisting that diplomacy achieved what prolonged conflict could not. Trump also highlighted falling oil prices and strong market performance as evidence that investors welcomed the agreement.

Despite the breakthrough, Trump warned that the United States could resume military action if Iran fails to comply with the deal's terms. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a similar warning, stressing that Washington retains military options if negotiations collapse.

The agreement has received support from several G7 nations and countries dependent on Middle Eastern energy supplies, but uncertainty remains over implementation. Questions persist about Iran's nuclear commitments, sanctions relief, and ongoing Israeli military operations in Lebanon, which are not covered directly by the accord.
