Starmer Faces Leadership Challenge Threat as Wes Streeting Signals Leadership Bid
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing renewed pressure after former Health Secretary Wes Streeting said he expects a formal challenge to Starmer's leadership as early as next week.
Speaking to Sky News presenter Cathy Newman, Streeting said Labour could no longer continue with ongoing uncertainty surrounding Starmer's future and suggested a leadership contest had become inevitable. He also confirmed that he intends to stand if a contest is triggered.
Streeting, who resigned from government earlier this year after losing confidence in Starmer's leadership, argued that Labour risks losing the next general election if it fails to address growing concerns among voters and party members. He accused Starmer of failing to listen to ministers, MPs, military leaders and voters following a series of political setbacks and internal resignations.
The comments come after a turbulent month for the government, including the resignation of Defence Secretary John Healey over defence spending disputes and increasing speculation that Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham could also seek Labour's top job.
Despite the growing pressure, Starmer has vowed to fight any leadership challenge. Speaking during the G7 summit in France, the prime minister insisted he has a mandate from the 2024 general election and dismissed calls for him to step aside.
Political analysts say the next week could prove decisive for Labour's future, with pressure mounting from within the party following poor local election results, cabinet resignations and growing competition from Reform UK.
