Iran Fires Missiles at Israel for First Time Since Ceasefire, Raising Fears of Wider War

The fragile ceasefire between Israel and Iran suffered its most serious setback yet after Israel said Iran launched missiles toward its territory on Sunday, marking the first direct bombardment since the truce began in April. Air raid sirens sounded across parts of northern Israel as defense systems were activated to intercept incoming threats.

The missile attack came hours after Israeli forces struck Beirut's southern suburbs, a stronghold of the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement. Lebanon reported casualties from the strike, while Tehran condemned the attack and warned that a "decisive and painful" response would follow. Iranian officials accused Israel of crossing "all red lines" through its operations in Lebanon.

The escalation threatens ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a broader peace agreement between Washington and Tehran. President Donald Trump has recently claimed a U.S.-Iran peace deal is "very close," but the latest exchange of fire has cast new doubt over those negotiations.

Regional mediators, including Egypt, Qatar, and Pakistan, continue efforts to prevent the conflict from expanding further. However, analysts warn that any sustained exchange between Iran and Israel could rapidly pull Lebanon and other regional actors back into a wider Middle East war
