G7 Leaders Focus on Hormuz Reopening, Iran Deal and Ukraine War at France Summit
Leaders of the Group of Seven nations gathered in Évian, France, on Tuesday with two major international crises dominating the agenda: the fragile U.S.-Iran peace agreement and Russia's war in Ukraine. Host President Emmanuel Macron said discussions would focus heavily on ensuring the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor disrupted during the recent conflict.
Macron said G7 countries are prepared to help guarantee maritime security and restore normal shipping through the strategic waterway. France and Britain are even discussing a potential naval mission to support safe navigation if the ceasefire framework continues to hold.
The summit comes just days after the United States and Iran announced a framework agreement intended to end months of conflict. However, major disagreements remain over sanctions relief, Lebanon, Israel's military presence in southern Lebanon and the future of Iran's nuclear program. G7 leaders are seeking clarity on how the agreement will be implemented.
Ukraine is the second major focus of the summit. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met Donald Trump and other Western leaders as Kyiv pushes for additional military aid, air-defense systems and stronger sanctions against Russia. Trump said he had a "very good" meeting with Zelenskyy and urged Moscow to pursue a peace agreement.
European leaders are also attempting to maintain unity amid concerns about global energy security, economic instability and the risk that either the Ukraine war or Middle East tensions could further disrupt international markets.
Diplomats say the summit is less about announcing major new initiatives and more about preventing two dangerous conflicts from escalating again. The success or failure of the U.S.-Iran agreement and future developments in Ukraine are expected to shape much of the discussions over the next two days.
