FORT LAUDERDALE: Spirit Airlines has abruptly shut down its operations, cancelling thousands of flights and leaving passengers stranded at airports across the United States.

Travelers arriving at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Saturday were informed at the airport that their flights had been cancelled, with many reporting no prior notification from the airline. Check-in counters remained closed, and customer service was largely unavailable, adding to confusion among passengers.

In its official statement, the airline confirmed that the shutdown took immediate effect and advised passengers not to travel to the airport. Customers who purchased tickets directly are expected to receive automatic refunds, while those who booked through third-party platforms have been asked to contact their agents.

Aviation experts say the sudden closure could significantly impact the US travel industry. The loss of a major low-cost carrier is expected to reduce seat availability, leading to higher airfares, especially on popular routes such as Florida, Las Vegas and other leisure destinations.

Concerns have also been raised over the status of loyalty points and travel credits, which may hold limited value depending on future financial proceedings. Analysts warn that affected passengers could face delays in compensation.

Several airlines have started offering limited alternatives to accommodate stranded travelers, but the disruption continues to affect thousands nationwide.

The sudden shutdown highlights ongoing challenges in the airline industry, including rising operational costs and increasing pressure on budget carriers, as demand for travel continues to grow.
