MV Hondius Heads Toward Spain Amid Global Health Alert

The cruise ship MV Hondius remains at the center of an international health scare after multiple hantavirus cases and several deaths were reported onboard during its voyage across the Atlantic Ocean.

The vessel is currently heading toward Spain’s Canary Islands after departing Cape Verde, where authorities reportedly refused docking permission amid growing concerns over the outbreak.

Health agencies worldwide are now investigating potential exposure risks linked to passengers and crew members who may have come into contact with infected individuals.

Three Deaths Confirmed in Virus Outbreak

According to the World Health Organization, at least three confirmed and five suspected hantavirus cases have been identified onboard the cruise ship so far.

Three people have died during the outbreak, including two Dutch passengers and one German citizen.

A 69-year-old Dutch man died onboard the vessel in April, while his wife later became ill and also died after testing positive for hantavirus.

Another German passenger reportedly died aboard the ship earlier this month as health concerns intensified.

British Worker Among Patients Evacuated

Authorities confirmed that three people were medically evacuated from the ship, including a British crew worker, a Dutch employee, and a German passenger.

One infected British individual later spoke to Sky News from hospital as international health officials continued monitoring the situation.

Medical teams are now working to identify possible transmission routes and determine whether more passengers may have been exposed during the voyage.

US and Global Health Authorities Monitoring Situation

The United States and multiple international health agencies said they are closely monitoring developments surrounding the outbreak.

Officials currently believe the public health risk remains relatively low, but investigations continue as the ship approaches Europe.

Experts say hantavirus infections are rare but can become severe and potentially deadly depending on the strain and timing of treatment.

Cruise Ship Continues Journey to Canary Islands

The MV Hondius began its journey in South America before crossing the Atlantic toward Africa and Europe.

The ship is expected to arrive in the Canary Islands on Saturday as authorities prepare additional medical and quarantine procedures if necessary.

The outbreak has raised fresh concerns over health safety protocols aboard international cruise vessels following recent global virus-related incidents.
