Authorities have identified the two suspects accused in the deadly attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego as 17-year-old Cain Clark and 18-year-old Caleb Velasquez, according to reports citing law enforcement sources.
The attack left three men dead and is now being investigated by authorities as a possible hate crime after investigators reportedly discovered evidence of “hate rhetoric.”
Police said both suspects were later found dead inside a vehicle several blocks from the mosque with apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Family Says They Were “In Shock”
Cain Clark’s grandfather, David Clark, told reporters:
“We’re very sorry for what happened. We know as much as you do. It’s a shock.”
According to school officials, Clark had previously participated in wrestling at Madison High School and had reportedly been attending classes virtually through iHigh Virtual Academy since 2021.
Mother Reportedly Warned Police Before Attack
Scott Wahl said one suspect’s mother contacted authorities about two hours before the shooting to report her son missing.
Police said the situation became more alarming after the mother informed investigators:
- Some firearms were missing
- Her vehicle had disappeared
- Her son appeared suicidal
- He was dressed in camouflage and accompanied by another individual
Officials said these details raised fears the situation could involve violence beyond a suicide attempt.
Hate Crime Investigation Underway
Authorities say investigators uncovered evidence suggesting extremist or anti-Muslim rhetoric, leading the case to be formally investigated as a hate crime.
Federal and local law enforcement agencies continue reviewing:
- Digital communications
- Weapons evidence
- Social media activity
- Potential ideological motives
The deadly attack has shocked communities across San Diego and renewed national concerns over religiously motivated violence and extremism.
