IRGC Forces Board Foreign Vessel in Dramatic Gulf Operation
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it has seized an oil tanker during a “special operation” in the Gulf of Oman amid rising regional tensions and growing fears over the Strait of Hormuz crisis.
Iranian state media identified the vessel as the Barbados-flagged tanker Ocean Koi, accusing it of attempting to “disrupt Iranian oil exports and national interests.”
State television released dramatic footage showing armed Iranian forces boarding and taking control of the ship at sea.
Iran Warns It Will Defend Gulf Waters
According to Iranian military statements, the tanker was redirected toward Iran’s southern coast after being detained by naval forces.
Iranian officials declared they would “powerfully defend the interests and assets of the Iranian nation” and warned that no violations inside Iranian-controlled waters would be tolerated.
The incident marks another major escalation in the already fragile Gulf situation as tensions continue between Iran, the United States, and regional allies.
Tehran Introduces ‘New Maritime Regime’
Iranian officials also revealed plans for what they called a “new maritime regime” in the Strait of Hormuz.
Under the proposed system:
- ships passing through the strait may require Iranian clearance
- vessels could be asked to submit cargo details
- additional maritime controls and toll systems may be introduced
Iran says the measures are designed to protect national security and strengthen control over one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.
