Retired Investigator Suggests Cross-Border Link May Have Been Ignored

The investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie has taken a dramatic new turn after a retired Arizona law enforcement official suggested possible Mexico connections may have been downplayed early in the case.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, vanished from her Tucson, Arizona home under suspicious circumstances, with investigators later discovering blood evidence outside the property.

Former Lieutenant Questions Delayed FBI Involvement

Retired Arizona Department of Public Safety Lieutenant Dave Smith said he believes authorities may have avoided raising possible cross-border concerns because it could have immediately triggered federal involvement.

Smith claimed that if investigators suspected the victim was transported to Mexico, the case would likely fall under federal jurisdiction.

The comments come after FBI Director Kash Patel reportedly criticized delays in involving federal authorities in the investigation.

According to reports, the FBI was not brought into the case until several days after Guthrie disappeared.

Mexico Border Raises New Questions

Smith pointed to Tucson’s close proximity to the Mexican border, noting that Nogales is only about 60 miles away.

He also referenced surveillance footage allegedly showing the suspect carrying a holstered firearm in a style commonly associated with Mexican cartels and criminal groups.

The former investigator suggested the possibility that Guthrie may have been taken across the border cannot be ruled out.

Harsh Desert Conditions Complicate Investigation

Investigators are also facing major challenges searching Arizona’s desert terrain.

Dense desert drainage channels, known locally as “washes,” surround many neighborhoods in Tucson and can quickly destroy evidence after rainfall or extreme heat exposure.

Authorities say the harsh environment makes tracking suspects and preserving forensic evidence extremely difficult.

Case Continues to Spark National Attention

The disappearance has drawn nationwide attention due to Nancy Guthrie’s connection to NBC “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie.

Officials have not publicly confirmed any Mexico connection, and the investigation remains active.

Meanwhile, questions continue growing over:

  • delayed federal involvement
  • crime scene handling
  • surveillance footage
  • possible cross-border activity

The mystery surrounding the case continues to deepen as authorities search for answers.
