WHO Boss Criticizes Handling of Hantavirus Cruise Ship Outbreak

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has described it as “cruel” to leave people stranded aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship during the ongoing hantavirus outbreak investigation.

The comments came as the virus-hit vessel departed for the Netherlands after its remaining passengers disembarked in Tenerife.

MV Hondius Leaves Tenerife After Final Passenger Evacuation

The MV Hondius became the center of international concern after suspected hantavirus cases triggered emergency health measures and evacuations during the cruise.

Authorities have been monitoring passengers and crew as fears over the rare rat-linked virus continue to grow.

Hantavirus Cases Spark Global Health Concerns

Hantavirus is a rare but potentially serious disease commonly linked to rodents and rat droppings. Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, breathing problems, and severe respiratory complications in some cases.

Health officials are continuing investigations into how exposure may have occurred aboard the ship.

WHO Calls for Stronger Passenger Protection Measures

Dr Tedros stressed that passengers caught in such outbreaks must be treated with care and transparency, warning against leaving individuals isolated without proper support.

The incident has reignited global debate about health safety protocols on cruise ships and international outbreak response systems.
