Hegseth Grilled Over Exploding Iran War Costs

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth faced intense questioning in Congress over the growing financial and military impact of the Iran war as concerns rise in Washington over the length and direction of the conflict.

The high-stakes hearing comes amid fresh warnings about a possible humanitarian and economic crisis linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.

Pentagon Reveals Iran War Has Already Cost US $29 Billion

During the congressional hearing, Pentagon officials confirmed that the Iran conflict has now cost the United States approximately $29 billion.

According to Jules Hurst, under secretary of war and chief financial officer, nearly $24 billion has already been spent on weapons, missiles, munitions, and military equipment.

Officials said the updated figure also includes repair, replacement, and operational costs linked to ongoing military activity in the region.

Iran War Spending Jumps by $4 Billion in Less Than Two Weeks

The latest figures reveal a dramatic surge in war spending.

The Pentagon had previously estimated the cost of the conflict at $25 billion on April 29, meaning expenses have increased by another $4 billion in under two weeks.

Military officials admitted cost estimates are still being reviewed as operations continue.

Strait of Hormuz Crisis Raises Global Alarm

The hearing also comes as fears grow over instability in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.

Warnings of possible economic disruption and even “mass starvation” scenarios linked to shipping blockades and energy supply shocks have intensified global concern over the conflict.

Republicans Question Length of Iran Conflict

Several Republican lawmakers reportedly pressed Pentagon officials over how long the conflict could continue and whether the US risks becoming trapped in a prolonged regional war.

The growing financial burden and rising geopolitical tensions are now fueling debate inside Washington over the future of America’s involvement in the Iran conflict.
