Countering fake news, Punjab government's decision to implement defamation law
The Punjab government has decided to implement the Defamation Act 2024 to curb fake news.
The provincial government has decided to implement the Defamation Act 2024 to prevent false, fabricated and unreal news in Punjab. The law will apply to those false and untrue news spread through print, electronic and social media, which tarnishes the identity of an individual or organization.
The law will be applied to remedy false news that is spread to harm a person's privacy and public position. The Defamation Ordinance 2002 will change with the coming into force of this Act.
The Punjab government presented the Defamation Bill 2024 in the Provincial Assembly.
