After Historic UN Map Vote, Africa Turns to Schools and Technology Giants for the Real Change

NEW YORK — A United Nations vote backing a world map that more accurately reflects Africa’s size has handed African governments a diplomatic victory, but the harder phase of their campaign now begins outside the General Assembly — in classrooms, publishing houses and the digital mapping systems used by billions of people.
The General Assembly voted 164-1 on Friday, with six abstentions, for a resolution promoting the Equal Earth projection as an alternative to the centuries-old Mercator projection. The United States cast the only opposing vote, arguing that the initiative advanced an ideological agenda and distracted from more pressing international issues. The resolution is not legally binding and does not prohibit Mercator maps, which remain useful for maritime and aerial navigation.
The distinction is important because the vote itself will not automatically replace the world maps hanging in classrooms or appearing on computer and phone screens. Instead, it gives political momentum to an African Union-backed campaign seeking changes in education systems, international institutions, publications and digital platforms. The African Union endorsed the “Correct the Map of Africa” initiative earlier this year after Togo championed the effort internationally.
The campaign targets one of the most familiar images of the world. The Mercator projection, developed by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569, preserves directions in ways that made it exceptionally useful for navigation but increasingly enlarges land masses as they approach the poles. That distortion makes Greenland appear roughly comparable with Africa on many Mercator maps even though Africa is about 14 times larger.
Equal Earth takes a different approach. Developed as an equal-area projection, it preserves the relative area of countries and continents, meaning Africa appears much closer to its actual geographic scale compared with Europe, North America and Greenland. The change does not make Africa physically larger; it removes a mathematical distortion embedded in one of the world's most recognizable map designs.
What happens next could determine whether Friday’s vote becomes more than a symbolic diplomatic achievement. Togo’s Foreign Minister Robert Dussey told Reuters that his country plans to change geography materials in its schools by the end of 2026, potentially making it an early test of how quickly governments can translate the international campaign into education policy.
Togo also plans discussions with African Union member states and supporters from other regions over the next six months to develop wider adoption of more proportionally accurate maps. Dussey said those discussions would eventually need to involve companies working in mapping, GPS and other location-based technologies, opening a potentially much larger phase of the campaign beyond governments and traditional publishers.
That digital dimension could ultimately matter more than replacing printed classroom maps. Maps are now encountered through smartphones, search services, navigation applications, news graphics and other digital products as frequently as through atlases. The African Union has already said its implementation strategy seeks integration of more accurate projections across education systems, digital platforms, media products and global publishing tools.
The campaign should not, however, be interpreted as the United Nations ordering every mapmaker to adopt a single new projection. UN Geospatial says the Secretariat itself has no universally prescribed projection for all its maps and uses several projections depending on purpose. The UN emblem also uses an azimuthal equidistant projection centered on the North Pole rather than the Mercator projection targeted by the African campaign.
Washington’s lone opposition also introduced a geopolitical dimension into what supporters describe as a cartographic correction. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz argued that the initiative could not be separated from a broader ideological project involving reparations and what supporters have described as cognitive justice. Ukraine was among the six countries abstaining, raising a separate concern about how territory occupied by Russia was depicted on Equal Earth maps associated with the initiative.
African Union officials have placed the initiative within a broader effort to challenge perceptions inherited from the colonial era. The AU says distorted representations can influence how Africa’s geographic scale, markets, infrastructure and global significance are perceived, and its implementation plan calls for governments, educators, geospatial specialists, media organisations and other partners to coordinate the transition toward more accurate representations.
That makes Friday’s vote less an endpoint than the beginning of an implementation test. The General Assembly has provided overwhelming diplomatic backing for the principle that Africa should be represented closer to its true geographic scale, but it cannot compel schools, publishers or technology companies to abandon familiar projections.
Whether the map most people actually see changes will therefore depend on what happens after the vote. If Togo succeeds in changing its textbooks and the African Union persuades other education systems and major digital platforms to follow, a cartographic convention that has survived for more than four centuries could gradually lose its dominance — not because the United Nations banned it, but because the institutions displaying the world decide there is a better way to draw it
