WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate narrowly confirmed Todd Blanche, President Donald Trump's former personal defense lawyer, as the nation's next attorney general early Saturday, ending one of the most contentious Cabinet confirmation battles of Trump's second term. Blanche was approved by a 50-49 vote, giving him permanent control of the Justice Department after months of political controversy.
Blanche's confirmation came after weeks of uncertainty, with several Republican senators expressing concerns over his close ties to Trump and controversial Justice Department proposals introduced while he served as acting attorney general. Two Republican senators — Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska — joined all Senate Democrats in opposing his nomination.
