Senate confirms Hamilton to lead FEMA as lawmakers approve more than 70 Trump nominees

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate on Friday confirmed David Hamilton as the new administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), capping a marathon confirmation push in which lawmakers approved more than 70 of President Donald Trump's nominees before leaving Washington for the August recess.
Hamilton's confirmation gives the Trump administration a permanent leader at FEMA as the United States enters the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, when the agency is responsible for coordinating federal disaster response and recovery efforts.
The Senate's confirmation blitz also cleared dozens of nominees for senior positions across federal departments and agencies, marking one of the administration's most productive stretches since Trump returned to office.
White House secures key appointments
Republican leaders accelerated confirmation votes this week in an effort to fill vacancies before Congress adjourned, arguing that federal agencies require permanent leadership to implement the administration's agenda.
In addition to Hamilton, senators approved nominees for positions involving homeland security, justice, transportation, energy and financial regulation, giving Trump greater control over the executive branch during the second half of his term.
The White House welcomed the votes, describing them as an important step toward strengthening federal agencies and improving government operations.
Democrats voice concerns
Democratic senators opposed several of the nominees, arguing that some lacked sufficient experience or could undermine the independence of federal institutions.
Others criticized the speed of the confirmation process, saying lawmakers had limited time to scrutinize candidates for influential government positions.
Despite the objections, Republicans held enough votes to advance the nominations.
FEMA enters critical period
Hamilton assumes leadership of FEMA as emergency officials monitor tropical systems and prepare for hurricanes, floods and wildfires that typically intensify during late summer and early autumn.
The agency oversees disaster declarations, emergency funding, search-and-rescue coordination and recovery assistance for states affected by major natural disasters.
Federal officials say maintaining experienced leadership is especially important during the busiest months of the disaster response calendar.
