WASHINGTON — Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana said Thursday he will support Todd Blanche's nomination to become the next U.S. attorney general, providing a significant boost to one of President Donald Trump's most closely watched Cabinet nominations.
Cassidy's endorsement comes after weeks of uncertainty surrounding Blanche's confirmation, with several Republican senators raising concerns over the Justice Department's proposed "anti-weaponization" compensation fund, a plan critics argued could politicize federal law enforcement.
The nomination gained momentum after Blanche agreed to withdraw the controversial proposal, removing what had become the biggest obstacle to securing enough Republican votes in the Senate.
"After reviewing the changes and speaking with the nominee, I will support Todd Blanche's confirmation," Cassidy said, signaling that he believes Blanche is now prepared to lead the Justice Department.
