Nepal Glacier Disaster Exposes the Risks Facing Mountain Communities as Thousands of Children Lose Homes, Schools and Family Security

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 28, 2026 — Eight-year-old Zoyal Ghale went to school in northern Nepal on Wednesday and ended the day separated from his family, injured and climbing trees in a forest to escape a torrent that destroyed the landscape around him. By Friday he had been reunited with his mother after being airlifted for treatment, one survivor among thousands of children caught in devastating floods across the Himalayan districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. At least 17,000 children have been affected in the three districts, according to UNICEF, while Reuters reported at least 580 people confirmed dead and around 2,500 missing across Nepal and China's Tibet after the disaster. The destruction has turned a sudden mountain hazard into a wider test of whether communities living beneath glaciers and unstable slopes have schools, warning systems, evacuation routes and emergency services capable of protecting children when the geography around them changes within minutes.
The floods began after the lower portion of a glacier near Nepal's Langtang Lirung mountain collapsed into the valley on Aug. 26, triggering an avalanche of ice and rock and a massive landslide, according to videos verified by Reuters. The resulting flood tore through communities below, destroying buildings and leaving roads and familiar landmarks buried beneath water, stones and mud. Ghale's mother, Matti Maya Tamang, told Reuters she initially believed both of her sons had been swept away after discovering their school had been destroyed and repeatedly failing to find their names at shelters and collection points. Her children survived, but the family's experience illustrates a problem that emergency casualty figures cannot fully capture: when a disaster destroys schools, roads and communications simultaneously, parents can lose the ability even to determine whether their children are alive.
That is why UNICEF's figure of 17,000 affected children represents more than the number physically injured by the floods. Children can become separated from caregivers during evacuation, lose identification documents, be moved between hospitals and shelters, miss schooling or find themselves living in temporary accommodation where normal protection systems have disappeared. UNICEF said it was working with Nepal's government to identify, register and reunite children separated from their families, a process that becomes particularly important when damaged communications and transport networks make ordinary family tracing difficult. Ghale's reunion itself demonstrates how fragile those connections can become: his mother eventually located him after obtaining the telephone number of a Reuters journalist who had encountered the injured child at a hospital before he was transferred to Kathmandu.
Schools are another part of the disaster infrastructure that deserves scrutiny. Ghale and his younger brother had travelled to school on Wednesday morning before the flood struck, and their school building was subsequently destroyed. Schools in hazard-prone communities serve two conflicting roles during disasters: they concentrate children in one location during the day, making evacuation planning critical, but intact school buildings can also become shelters and community centres after an emergency. When the school itself lies within the destruction zone, communities can lose both an education facility and part of the local infrastructure normally available for disaster response.
The implications extend well beyond the first days of rescue. Children who survive major disasters can lose months of education when classrooms are destroyed, families are displaced and teachers themselves are affected. Temporary learning spaces can restore some routine, but education competes immediately with shelter, food, water, healthcare and rebuilding household livelihoods. The UN's Sustainable Development Goal on education specifically calls for safe and inclusive learning environments, while the Nepal disaster demonstrates that in climate- and hazard-exposed regions, the physical location and resilience of a school can be as important to children's safety as what happens inside its classrooms.
The disaster also raises a more difficult question about Himalayan risk. A glacier collapse is not by itself proof that climate change caused an individual flood, and attributing a specific event requires scientific analysis of the glacier, weather, terrain and other contributing factors. But mountain communities across the Himalayas face a changing risk environment in which glaciers, glacial lakes, extreme precipitation, landslides and unstable terrain can interact with settlements and infrastructure below them. Treating every such disaster simply as an unpredictable act of nature risks overlooking whether roads, schools, settlements and warning systems are being designed for the hazards communities now face rather than the conditions that existed when that infrastructure was built.
Children are particularly exposed because they have little control over those decisions. They do not choose where a school is constructed, whether an evacuation route exists, how quickly warnings reach a village or whether bridges remain usable after a landslide. An adult may recognize an approaching danger and make an independent decision to flee, while a child at school depends on teachers, transport systems and emergency plans functioning under extreme pressure. Ghale survived partly by running into a forest and climbing trees, an extraordinary act of survival but not a substitute for a protection system designed to ensure children do not have to improvise their own escape.
The immediate humanitarian response must therefore operate on several levels at once. Search teams are still trying to locate missing people, injured survivors require medical treatment and displaced families need shelter, clean water and basic supplies. Children separated from caregivers must be identified and reunited safely, while authorities and aid organizations need to establish where displaced children will continue their education and how those who have experienced traumatic loss receive psychological and protection support. UNICEF said the number of children affected was expected to rise as search operations continued, meaning the initial 17,000 figure should be understood as an early measure rather than the final scale of the emergency.
Recovery will eventually pose harder choices than emergency response. Rebuilding a destroyed school in precisely the same location may restore education quickly but could reproduce the vulnerability that exposed children to the original disaster. Moving infrastructure can be safer but may increase travel distances or require relocating communities whose livelihoods and social networks are tied to particular valleys. Mountain resilience therefore requires decisions about land use, hazard mapping, building standards, communications and evacuation planning alongside the visible work of reconstructing roads and classrooms.
The same principle applies to family recovery. Finding a missing child is the most urgent objective in the first hours and days, but reunification does not end the consequences of displacement. Families may have lost homes, income, livestock, farmland and community networks, leaving parents struggling to rebuild while children process what they witnessed. If humanitarian assistance focuses exclusively on immediate survival and withdraws as casualty numbers disappear from international headlines, the longer disruption to children's health, education and emotional security can continue largely unseen.
Nepal's disaster also demonstrates why children's protection cannot be separated from disaster preparedness. Registration systems, emergency contact information, school evacuation protocols and procedures for tracing separated children can appear bureaucratic before a crisis, but become critical once normal communication collapses. The fact that a journalist's telephone number became an important link between one mother and her hospitalized son is a remarkable part of Ghale's survival story; it is also evidence of how quickly ordinary family communication can break down after a major disaster.
There will be time for scientists and authorities to establish more precisely why the Langtang Lirung glacier failed and what combination of geological, climatic and local factors transformed the collapse into such a destructive event. That analysis matters because effective adaptation depends on understanding actual hazards rather than assigning every extreme event to climate change without evidence. The humanitarian lesson, however, does not require waiting for final attribution: communities beneath glaciers and unstable mountain terrain need protection systems capable of functioning when low-probability but catastrophic events occur.
The most important measure of Nepal's recovery will consequently not be how quickly the mud is cleared from roads or how many destroyed buildings are reconstructed. It will be whether children return to schools that are safer than the ones they lost, whether families can be located quickly when disaster separates them, and whether communities receive warnings early enough that survival depends less on luck and improvisation. A resilient disaster system should be designed so the next eight-year-old does not have to save himself.
