Michigan Democratic primary emerges as key battle over the party's future

DETROIT — Michigan voters headed to the polls Tuesday in one of the most closely watched Democratic primaries of the 2026 election cycle, as the race to replace retiring Sen. Gary Peters evolved into a nationally significant contest between the party's progressive wing and its establishment leadership.
The Democratic Senate primary pits progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed, backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders and other prominent left-leaning leaders, against Rep. Haley Stevens, who has received support from many establishment Democrats and influential party figures. The winner will advance to November's general election in a state considered critical to both parties' hopes of controlling the U.S. Senate.
The contest has drawn national attention because it reflects broader debates inside the Democratic Party over healthcare, economic policy, labor rights, foreign policy and campaign strategy. Analysts say the outcome could shape how Democrats position themselves heading into the 2026 midterm elections.
Michigan's large Arab American population has also made the war in Gaza and U.S. policy toward Israel a major issue during the campaign. El-Sayed has called for ending unconditional U.S. military assistance to Israel, while Stevens has defended Israel's security but also criticized some policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Political strategists view the race as one of the clearest tests yet of whether progressive candidates can expand their influence beyond liberal strongholds and win statewide elections in a competitive battleground. At the same time, moderate Democrats argue candidates with broader appeal are better positioned to defeat Republicans in November.
The primary comes as Democrats seek to regain control of the Senate, making Michigan one of the party's most strategically important races this election cycle. Republicans are expected to heavily target the seat in November, ensuring that Tuesday's result will have implications well beyond state politics.
Election officials said voting proceeded across the state, with turnout expected to provide another measure of enthusiasm within the Democratic coalition. Final results are expected after polls close Tuesday evening.
