Ed Case faces progressive challenger in closely watched Hawaii Democratic primary

HONOLULU — Hawaii voters are deciding one of Saturday's most closely watched Democratic congressional primaries, where veteran U.S. Rep. Ed Case faces a serious challenge from state Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole in a contest that has become another test of the Democratic Party's ideological and generational direction.
Case, 73, is seeking another term representing Hawaii's 1st Congressional District, which includes urban Honolulu and much of southern Oahu. Keohokalole, 43, is challenging him from the left, arguing that the heavily Democratic district needs a younger and more progressive voice in Washington.
The race follows progressive victories and strong performances elsewhere in the 2026 Democratic primary season, increasing national interest in whether the party's left wing can unseat another established incumbent.
Case campaigns on experience and seniority
Case has represented the 1st District since 2019 and previously served in Congress representing Hawaii's 2nd District from 2002 to 2007.
He has positioned himself as an experienced, pragmatic Democrat and emphasized his seniority in Washington, including his position on the powerful House Appropriations Committee.
Case argues that giving up that seniority could reduce Hawaii's influence over federal spending at a time when the state depends heavily on Washington for infrastructure, defense, disaster recovery and other federal programs.
He won reelection overwhelmingly in 2024, taking 71.8% of the general-election vote, illustrating the district's strong Democratic lean.
Keohokalole says Hawaii needs change
Keohokalole is offering voters a distinctly different argument.
The state senator says Hawaii should send a new generation of leadership to Washington and has criticized Case as being too closely aligned with corporate interests.
His platform includes support for expanding government-backed healthcare and taking a different approach to U.S. policy toward Israel. Reuters reports that Keohokalole favors reducing U.S. aid to Israel, putting him closer to the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
That has transformed what might ordinarily have been a safe incumbent primary into a broader ideological contest.
Why Democrats nationally are watching Hawaii
The importance of the election extends beyond the two candidates.
Progressive Democrats have increasingly challenged established members of their own party, arguing that voters want younger candidates and more aggressive positions on healthcare, economic inequality, Gaza and corporate influence.
Keohokalole's campaign fits directly into that movement.
A victory would give progressives another argument that their recent momentum is spreading beyond mainland Democratic strongholds.
A Case victory, however, would demonstrate that experience, seniority and a more moderate political approach still carry substantial weight among Democratic voters.
An unusual feature could help Case
Hawaii's primary system adds another complication.
Voters do not register by political party, meaning independents and voters who may normally support Republicans can choose to participate in the Democratic primary as long as they vote only one party's ballot.
Reuters notes that this potentially gives Case access to a broader pool of moderate voters than he might encounter in a conventional closed Democratic primary.
That could prove important in a race where ideological differences between the candidates are unusually pronounced.
The seat itself is unlikely to flip Republican
Despite the intensity of the Democratic contest, Hawaii's 1st District remains strongly Democratic.
That means Saturday's primary could effectively determine who represents the district in the next Congress, even though a general election will still take place in November.
The larger national battle for control of the House is therefore unlikely to turn directly on this seat.
Instead, the political significance is about what kind of Democrat Hawaii sends to Washington.
Results still awaited
Hawaii's official ballot confirms Case and Keohokalole are among the Democratic candidates competing for the 1st District nomination in the August 8 primary.
As of the latest reports available Saturday, the contest is still being treated as an active race and no reliable projection of a winner has been made. The Washington Post is tracking the results live, while Reuters describes the contest as one of the latest tests of the Democratic establishment against a younger challenger from the left.
Why It Matters
The Hawaii contest won't simply decide a congressional nominee.
A Keohokalole victory would strengthen the argument that Democratic voters are increasingly willing to replace older establishment lawmakers with younger progressives — following similar intraparty battles elsewhere in the country.
A Case victory would provide an important counterpoint: that experience, committee seniority and moderate politics remain powerful advantages even during a year of progressive momentum.
Either way, Hawaii's safely Democratic 1st District has unexpectedly become another battlefield in the larger struggle over where the Democratic Party is heading ahead of the 2026 midterms.
