Trump, Republicans Revive ‘Communist’ Attacks on Democrats Ahead of 2026 Midterm Elections

By Saqib S. Qureshi

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump and Republican leaders are intensifying their attacks on Democrats by repeatedly labeling progressive candidates as "communists" ahead of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, signaling a return to one of America's oldest political campaign strategies.

In recent speeches, Trump warned that the Democratic Party's rising progressive wing wants to "completely destroy the traditional American way of life." Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson have echoed similar themes, accusing self-described democratic socialists of promoting Marxist ideology and radical policies.

The renewed messaging follows a series of victories by progressive and democratic socialist candidates in Democratic primaries, including races in New York and Denver, which Republicans argue reflect a broader ideological shift within the Democratic Party.

Republicans hope the rhetoric will energize conservative voters and shift attention away from concerns over inflation, the economy and other issues that could weigh on the GOP during the midterm campaign. Democrats, meanwhile, reject the characterization, arguing that democratic socialism focuses on expanded social programs, healthcare and economic reforms—not communism.

Political analysts say the debate highlights the growing ideological divide in American politics as both parties prepare for a fiercely contested election that will determine control of Congress. Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in both the House and Senate, making every competitive race especially significant.
