Missouri Couple in Viral 2020 BLM Gun Standoff Say Legal Battle Restored Their Firearms and Public Voice

By SCN News Desk

ST. LOUIS — Mark and Patricia McCloskey, the Missouri lawyers whose armed confrontation with Black Lives Matter protesters became one of the defining images of 2020, say they have finally recovered their confiscated firearms after years of litigation and believe the legal fight gave them "a voice" on constitutional rights.

The couple faced criminal charges after pointing firearms at protesters marching through their private neighborhood in St. Louis during nationwide demonstrations following the death of George Floyd. Supporters argued they were defending their property, while critics said the couple unnecessarily escalated the confrontation.

In 2021, both pleaded guilty to misdemeanor offenses before receiving pardons from then-Missouri Governor Mike Parson. In 2024, a judge ordered their convictions expunged, and after additional lawsuits, the couple regained possession of their firearms.

Mark McCloskey said the lengthy legal battle reinforced his commitment to defending constitutional rights, adding that the experience ultimately provided the couple with a national platform to speak publicly on the First and Second Amendments.
