Trump Pentagon Policy Chief Faces Rare Revolt From Top Republicans Over Europe Troop Dispute

By Saqib S. Qureshi

WASHINGTON — A rare internal Republican clash has erupted over President Donald Trump's top Pentagon policy official, Elbridge Colby, as senior GOP lawmakers accuse him of withholding information about U.S. troop reductions in Europe, exposing a widening divide over America's global military role.

The dispute centers on an October meeting between House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers and Colby. According to Rogers, he asked directly whether the Trump administration planned to withdraw U.S. troops from Romania after learning such plans were under consideration. Rogers says Colby responded that he was unaware of any upcoming reductions.

Just two weeks later, the administration announced it would remove a U.S. Army brigade stationed in Romania, a force deployed to strengthen NATO's eastern defenses following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Rogers later accused Colby of misleading Congress.

Colby strongly rejected that allegation, saying the final decision had not yet been approved during the meeting and that he was careful not to commit the Defense Department before an official order existed. He said military commanders had also recommended the move and formally asked Rogers to withdraw the accusation.

The disagreement has since evolved into one of the most visible Republican national security battles of Trump's second administration.

Congressional Republicans Push Back

Republican lawmakers on both the House and Senate Armed Services Committees have intensified oversight of Colby's office, blocked confirmations of two of his preferred deputies and challenged several Pentagon policy decisions.

The dispute reflects a broader struggle within the Republican Party over what "America First" should mean in practice.

One faction, represented by Colby, argues the United States should shift military resources away from Europe and the Middle East to focus primarily on countering China in the Indo-Pacific.

Traditional Republican defense hawks, including Rogers, argue that maintaining a strong U.S. military presence in Europe remains essential for deterring Russia and reassuring NATO allies.

Why It Matters

The clash highlights growing tensions inside the Trump administration over defense priorities as Washington reassesses its global military posture.

With Europe seeking greater responsibility for its own security while Russia's war against Ukraine continues, disagreements over troop deployments and congressional oversight could influence future U.S. commitments to NATO and America's broader defense strategy.

The controversy also illustrates that the debate over Trump's "America First" foreign policy is increasingly taking place within the Republican Party itself—not just between Republicans and Democrats.
