Spain races to contain border crisis after tens of thousands cross from Morocco into Ceuta

MADRID — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez moved to contain one of Europe's biggest migration emergencies in years after an estimated 60,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta within 24 hours, overwhelming local authorities and triggering a humanitarian and political crisis.
The unprecedented influx has stretched Ceuta's reception facilities beyond capacity, leaving thousands of migrants—including families and unaccompanied minors—without shelter while emergency services struggle to provide food, medical care and temporary accommodation. Officials say dozens of people died during the chaotic crossings, many by drowning or in stampedes near the border.
Sánchez blamed human trafficking networks for exploiting migrants with false information following a recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling that complicated the immediate return of people intercepted after arriving by sea. The prime minister said Spain would restore order while continuing to work with Morocco and European partners to manage the crisis.
Spain has reinforced security around Ceuta by deploying additional police and military personnel while accelerating talks with Morocco on returning migrants who entered illegally. Authorities are also installing new border barriers and increasing patrols along the coastline.
The crisis has quickly become a European concern.
France and Italy have tightened border monitoring amid fears that migrants could move deeper into the Schengen area, while the European Commission condemned the mass crossing and pledged support for Spain's border management efforts.
Spain's opposition accused Sánchez's government of losing control of the country's borders, calling for tougher immigration measures and stronger cooperation with Morocco to prevent further crossings. The government insists humanitarian obligations must be balanced with border security and says criminal smuggling networks are driving the surge.
The events echo the 2021 Ceuta migration crisis but on a far larger scale, raising fresh questions about Europe's ability to respond to sudden mass migration while maintaining security and humanitarian protections.
