Thousands Return Home in Spain as New Heatwave Raises Fresh Wildfire Fears

Thousands of residents have begun returning to their homes across parts of Spain after firefighters gained ground against several major wildfires. But authorities warn the respite could be short-lived, with another intense heatwave forecast to bring soaring temperatures, strong winds and renewed wildfire danger across the country.
MADRID — Thousands of evacuees were allowed to return home on Wednesday after emergency crews stabilized several major wildfires that forced widespread evacuations across central and eastern Spain. Officials, however, cautioned that another spell of extreme heat expected over the coming days could quickly reignite existing fire zones and spark new blazes.
Spain's emergency services have spent days battling fires fueled by exceptionally dry vegetation, strong winds and prolonged high temperatures. While firefighters have managed to contain several fronts near Madrid and Avila, a large wildfire in the eastern province of Castellón remains out of control after burning thousands of hectares of forest. Around 10,000 people were displaced by that blaze, with many communities still under evacuation orders.
Heatwave threatens new flare-ups
Spain's national weather agency has warned that a fresh heatwave will push temperatures close to 40°C (104°F) across parts of the country, creating ideal conditions for dormant fires to reignite.
Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska warned that Spain faces "three very difficult days" as high temperatures combine with low humidity and strong winds, making firefighting operations significantly more challenging. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant even in areas where evacuation orders have been lifted.
Fire commanders said hotspots can remain active beneath burned vegetation for days, allowing flames to return rapidly when weather conditions worsen.
Firefighters remain on high alert
Although thousands of residents have returned home, hundreds of firefighters, military emergency units and aerial crews remain deployed across affected regions to prevent fresh outbreaks.
Emergency officials continue monitoring burned forests using drones and thermal imaging equipment to identify underground hotspots before they spread again. Officials also warned residents not to enter heavily damaged woodland areas because weakened trees and unstable terrain pose continuing risks even after visible flames disappear.
Europe battles another extreme summer
Spain's wildfire emergency forms part of a broader crisis across southern Europe.
Neighboring France continues battling one of its largest wildfires in decades near Bordeaux, where more than 220,000 people have been evacuated. Greece and Turkey are also confronting multiple major fires as exceptionally hot weather grips much of the Mediterranean region. Scientists say increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves linked to climate change are extending Europe's wildfire season and increasing pressure on emergency services.
Climate pressures intensify
Climate researchers say prolonged drought, record temperatures and dry vegetation are creating conditions that allow wildfires to spread faster and burn more intensely than in previous decades.
Emergency agencies across Europe have expanded aerial firefighting fleets and strengthened cross-border cooperation, but officials acknowledge that repeated heatwaves continue stretching available resources during increasingly long fire seasons.
