Extreme Heat Grips US as America 250 Celebrations Begin, Trump Heads to Mount Rushmore

Large-scale celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence are underway across the United States, but extreme heat is forcing organizers to take additional safety measures as millions prepare for holiday events.

President Donald Trump is traveling to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota on Friday, where he is scheduled to deliver a keynote address and attend a fireworks display marking the start of the America 250 celebrations. The visit will be followed by a major Independence Day event on Saturday at the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Across much of the country, dangerously high temperatures are prompting organizers to expand cooling stations, distribute water and review outdoor event plans. In Washington, officials canceled a rehearsal for the annual Capitol Fourth concert because of the heat, while cities including Boston and Gettysburg have also adjusted preparations.

In New York City, Times Square will host a special midnight ball drop to usher in the Fourth of July, one of several unique events planned for the nation's semiquincentennial celebrations. Fireworks, parades and community gatherings are scheduled nationwide throughout the holiday weekend.

At Mount Rushmore, Trump will be joined by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. The event includes patriotic ceremonies and a fireworks display, although officials have acknowledged concerns about wildfire risks because of drought conditions in parts of South Dakota.

The celebrations come as the administration also faces broader political and economic challenges, including elevated fuel prices and continued debate over U.S. foreign policy, but organizers say the anniversary events are intended to focus on the nation's history and future.
