The United States and Iran are expected to formally sign their peace agreement in Switzerland on Friday, marking a major diplomatic milestone after months of conflict and negotiations. Senior U.S. officials say the memorandum of understanding has already been digitally signed, with the Switzerland ceremony set to launch the next phase of implementation.
The agreement is designed to end the near four-month conflict and establish a 60-day framework for negotiating a broader settlement covering Iran's nuclear program, sanctions relief, regional security issues and economic normalization.
One of the most closely watched elements of the deal is the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies normally pass. U.S. officials say shipping traffic is expected to increase gradually after the formal signing ceremony.
