Iran Warns ‘Strong Response Is Coming’ After Israeli Strike on Beirut Threatens Peace Efforts
TEHRAN/BEIRUT — Iran has warned that a "strong response is coming" after Israel launched a deadly strike on Beirut's southern suburbs, an attack that Tehran says risks undermining fragile diplomatic efforts to end months of conflict across the Middle East.
The warning came hours after Israeli forces targeted what they described as Hezbollah-linked positions in Beirut's Dahiyeh district. Israeli officials said the operation was carried out after Hezbollah launched projectiles toward northern Israel, which Israel called a violation of the existing ceasefire framework.
Senior Iranian officials condemned the attack, accusing Israel of escalating tensions at a critical moment. Iranian parliamentary speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said recent actions showed that Washington and Israel were not committed to de-escalation, while other Iranian officials warned that retaliation was being considered.
The latest confrontation comes as negotiators work to finalize a U.S.-Iran agreement intended to halt a three-month conflict that has disrupted shipping routes, rattled energy markets and heightened fears of a wider regional war. President Donald Trump publicly criticized the Beirut strike, saying it should not have happened and warning that it could jeopardize a deal that he says is close to completion.
Iran has repeatedly insisted that any lasting agreement must include an end to Israeli military operations in Lebanon. Tehran has previously warned that continued attacks against Hezbollah could trigger renewed hostilities and derail diplomatic progress.
Regional analysts say the next few days could prove decisive. If Iran follows through on its threats, the Beirut strike could trigger another cycle of retaliation between Israel, Hezbollah and Iran, potentially delaying or even collapsing the emerging peace framework.
