Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates told U.S. lawmakers that convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein attempted to use knowledge of Gates' extramarital affairs to pressure him into maintaining a relationship, according to testimony delivered before the House Oversight Committee.

During a closed-door congressional interview, Gates said he did not fully understand the extent of Epstein's criminal conduct when the two first met regarding philanthropic initiatives. He insisted he never witnessed criminal behavior by Epstein and never participated in any wrongdoing.

In prepared remarks, Gates acknowledged that Epstein later became aware of sensitive details about his personal life, including marital infidelities. Gates testified that Epstein attempted to use that information, along with what he described as false claims, to pressure him into re-engaging with the disgraced financier. Gates said those efforts were unsuccessful.

The billionaire philanthropist described his meetings with Epstein as a "grave error in judgment" and said the association risked damaging both his reputation and the work of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He told lawmakers that if his interactions gave Epstein credibility, he deeply regrets it.

Gates also reiterated that he never visited Epstein's private island, ranch, or Florida residence and declared, "I have never victimized anyone." He said discussions with Epstein between 2011 and 2014 focused primarily on potential philanthropic fundraising efforts that ultimately went nowhere.

The testimony is part of a broader congressional investigation into the U.S. government's handling of the Epstein case, including questions surrounding past plea agreements, trafficking investigations, and individuals connected to Epstein's network. Lawmakers have interviewed several high-profile figures as part of the ongoing inquiry.

While Gates has faced scrutiny over his past association with Epstein, he has not been accused of criminal wrongdoing in connection with the case. The focus of the hearing was his interactions with Epstein and what information he may have about Epstein's efforts to cultivate relationships with influential public figures.
