Marco Rubio says “slight progress” has been made in negotiations with Iran as Pakistan launched a renewed diplomatic push to prevent another regional war.

Speaking ahead of a NATO foreign ministers meeting in Helsingborg, Rubio said ongoing talks between Washington and Tehran had shown:

“a little bit of movement and that’s good.”

However, he cautioned against overstating the breakthrough, stressing that negotiations remain fragile and unresolved.

Trump Delays Military Action Again

The latest comments come after Donald Trump said he had paused planned military action against Iran because “serious negotiations” were underway.

Trump has repeatedly warned Tehran that the ceasefire reached earlier this year could collapse if no agreement is reached. He has also alternated between threatening military strikes and extending diplomatic deadlines.

According to US officials, Gulf allies including:

  • Qatar
  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates

urged Washington to give diplomacy more time before considering renewed attacks.

Pakistan Army Chief Travels to Tehran

In a major regional diplomatic effort, Asim Munir arrived in Tehran Friday for another round of talks with Iranian leadership.

Pakistani officials confirmed this marks the third round of high-level contacts between Pakistan and Iran in recent days.

Pakistan’s mediation efforts have intensified after Islamabad hosted direct face-to-face talks between US and Iranian representatives last month.

Mohsin Naqvi has also held multiple meetings with Iranian officials this week as Islamabad attempts to keep negotiations alive.

Strait of Hormuz Crisis Continues

Despite diplomatic efforts, tensions remain extremely high around the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has effectively tightened operational control over the critical shipping corridor, while the United States continues restrictions targeting Iranian ports and maritime activity.

According to US Central Command:

  • 94 commercial vessels were redirected
  • Four vessels were disabled between mid-April and Thursday

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy routes, carrying major global oil and gas supplies.

NATO Monitoring Post-War Security Role

NATO foreign ministers are also discussing what role the alliance could play in securing shipping lanes and stabilizing the Gulf region if a longer-term agreement is reached.

Security analysts warn that failure in diplomacy could lead to:

  • Renewed US-Iran military conflict
  • Global energy disruption
  • Oil price spikes
  • Expanded regional warfare
