US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is heading to a major NATO meeting in Sweden this week as European allies grow increasingly concerned over President Donald Trump’s foreign policy direction, possible US troop reductions in Europe and the fallout from the Iran war.

The high-level NATO foreign ministers meeting in Helsingborg comes ahead of the alliance’s upcoming summit in Ankara, Turkey, where security, military spending and regional tensions are expected to dominate discussions.

Multiple US and international media reports, including AP, said European officials remain uneasy over Trump’s often unpredictable stance toward NATO and fears Washington could reduce its long-term military commitment to Europe. Concerns have also intensified following the recent Iran conflict and rising global energy prices.

According to the State Department, Rubio is expected to push NATO allies for increased defense spending and greater “burden sharing” within the alliance while also focusing on Arctic security and strategic interests in the High North.

The trip also comes amid renewed controversy surrounding Trump’s comments about Greenland. Trump’s special envoy for Greenland, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, recently visited the island, prompting fresh debate across Europe.

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen responded by stating that Greenland’s future belongs to its people alone.

“The Greenlandic people are not for sale. Greenlandic self-determination is not something that can be negotiated,” Nielsen said following the meeting.

After the NATO gathering, Rubio is scheduled to travel to India for diplomatic meetings involving members of the “Quad” alliance, including India, Australia and Japan, as Washington continues strengthening Indo-Pacific partnerships amid growing global tensions.
