Children’s Book Author Kouri Richins Sentenced to Life Without Parole in Husband’s Fentanyl Death Case

A Utah court has sentenced children’s book author Kouri Richins to life in prison without parole after she was convicted of killing her husband with a fentanyl-laced drink.

The case drew nationwide attention after Richins published a children’s book focused on helping her sons cope with grief following their father’s death — before later being charged in the killing.

During sentencing, Judge Richard Mrazik described Richins as “too dangerous to ever be free,” saying the punishment was necessary to protect others and reflect the seriousness of the crime.

The judge also highlighted the emotional damage suffered by the couple’s three sons, noting court records showed the children themselves supported a life sentence because they feared their mother.

Richins appeared in court wearing a lime green jail uniform as supporters sat behind her, while the family of her late husband, Eric Richins, attended the hearing nearby.

Eric’s father emotionally told the court his son was a devoted parent whose children “lost a father,” adding that local sports teams still honor him by chanting “1-2-3 Eric” during huddles.

The sentencing closes one of Utah’s most shocking recent murder cases, marked by allegations of deception, family tragedy, and public attention surrounding the author’s book released after her husband’s death.
