China has sharply criticized the United States after Washington announced criminal charges against a former Cuban leader, accusing the U.S. of escalating tensions and interfering in sovereign affairs.

Beijing’s Foreign Ministry urged the United States to “stop threats and pressure against Cuba,” warning that continued sanctions and legal actions could further destabilize relations in the region. The statement came shortly after U.S. authorities unveiled charges linked to alleged human rights abuses and political repression involving former Cuban officials.

Chinese officials defended Cuba’s sovereignty and condemned what they described as Washington’s long-standing policy of political and economic pressure against Havana. Analysts say China’s response highlights its growing diplomatic alignment with Cuba amid rising geopolitical competition between Beijing and Washington.

The latest dispute adds another layer of tension to already strained U.S.-China relations, which remain under pressure over trade, Taiwan, military activity, and influence in Latin America. Political observers believe the Cuba issue could become another symbolic flashpoint in the broader global rivalry between the two superpowers.

Meanwhile, Cuban officials rejected the accusations and called the U.S. legal move politically motivated. Human rights groups, however, argue accountability efforts are necessary for alleged abuses tied to past crackdowns on anti-government protests.
