Trump Says He Will Speak to Taiwan’s President in Major Break From U.S. Protocol

U.S. President Donald Trump said he plans to speak directly with Taiwan’s president, signaling a possible shift away from long-standing diplomatic norms that have governed U.S.-Taiwan relations for decades.

The announcement has already drawn global attention because direct high-level communication between U.S. presidents and Taiwanese leaders is considered highly sensitive. China views Taiwan as part of its territory and strongly opposes official recognition or direct political engagement with Taipei by foreign governments.

Political analysts say Trump’s statement could intensify tensions between Washington and Beijing at a time when both countries are already locked in disputes over trade, military activity, technology, and influence in the Indo-Pacific region.

Beijing has repeatedly warned the United States against increasing support for Taiwan, calling such actions interference in China’s internal affairs. Taiwan, meanwhile, continues to strengthen diplomatic and security ties with Western allies amid growing military pressure from China.

Experts believe any direct conversation between Trump and Taiwan’s leadership would likely trigger a strong reaction from Beijing and could further complicate already fragile U.S.-China relations.
