Aston Villa produced one of the greatest nights in the club’s modern history after defeating SC Freiburg 3-0 in Istanbul to lift the Europa League trophy and end a 30-year wait for major silverware.
The historic victory marked Aston Villa’s first major trophy since the 1996 League Cup and added another unforgettable European chapter to a club already famous for winning the European Cup in 1982.
In front of several members of Villa’s legendary 1982 side, including former captain Dennis Mortimer and goalscorer Peter Withe, the current generation delivered a performance supporters are unlikely to forget.
Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emi Buendía and Morgan Rogers sealed the emphatic victory as thousands of Villa fans celebrated wildly inside the stadium.
Tielemans opened the scoring with a spectacular volley following a cleverly worked short-corner routine before Buendia curled a brilliant effort into the top corner to put Villa firmly in control.
Rogers then completed the night with Villa’s third goal, sparking emotional scenes among the substitutes and coaching staff on the touchline.
Manager Unai Emery once again strengthened his reputation as one of Europe’s greatest knockout competition coaches. The triumph marked Emery’s fifth Europa League title, extending his own competition record.
Speaking after the final, Emery praised the club’s owners, players and supporters for backing his vision since arriving at Villa Park.
“We are the kings together,” Emery said while celebrating with players and fans after the final whistle.
Villa captain John McGinn lifted the trophy in front of jubilant supporters as the club secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League alongside the Europa League crown.
The victory also capped a dramatic turnaround for Villa after a difficult start to the season. Players admitted the team struggled early in the campaign before Emery transformed their form and mentality.
Former Villa midfielder Ian Taylor, part of the club’s 1996 League Cup-winning side, was seen celebrating emotionally in the press area as the club finally ended decades of frustration.
A trophy parade is expected in Birmingham as supporters prepare to celebrate one of the biggest achievements in Aston Villa’s recent history.
