US Acknowledges On-Orbit Space Weapons for First Time, Citing Threats From China and Russia

NATIONAL HARBOR, Maryland — The United States has publicly acknowledged for the first time that it has deployed weapons in orbit, ending years of official ambiguity over American offensive capabilities in space as Washington increasingly treats the domain as a potential battlefield alongside land, sea and air.

Air Force Secretary Troy Meink disclosed the capability on Monday at the Air & Space Forces Association's Air, Space & Cyber Conference in Maryland, saying the United States now possesses what he described as “on-orbit space control weapons” capable of protecting U.S. and allied forces against hostile action. The U.S. Space Force subsequently confirmed the existence of the systems.

Neither Meink nor the Space Force disclosed what the weapons are, how many have been deployed, when they entered orbit or whether they are kinetic systems capable of physically damaging another spacecraft. Officials also declined to discuss their payloads, technical characteristics or how they might be employed in a conflict.

The disclosure is significant because the Pentagon has spent years speaking increasingly openly about threats to American satellites while remaining guarded about whether the United States itself had operational weapons stationed in orbit. Meink's statement is the clearest public acknowledgement yet that Washington has moved beyond developing such capabilities and has systems already deployed.

Meink said the decision was driven by the growing importance of space to military operations and by capabilities being developed by China and Russia. U.S. forces rely extensively on satellites for communications, navigation, intelligence, surveillance, missile warning and targeting, making those spacecraft increasingly important in any major conflict.

Washington has repeatedly accused Beijing and Moscow of developing systems capable of threatening satellites. U.S. officials have pointed to highly manoeuvrable Chinese spacecraft, electronic warfare capabilities and Russian anti-satellite programmes as evidence that American military assets in orbit face a growing challenge. Meink said the United States needed the ability to protect itself in an environment where potential adversaries had spent more than a decade developing such capabilities.

The phrase “space control” leaves considerable room for interpretation. Space Force doctrine encompasses both kinetic and non-kinetic methods that can disrupt, degrade or destroy an adversary's ability to operate in space. Such capabilities could theoretically include electronic jammers, spoofing systems, directed-energy devices or physical interceptors, but the Pentagon has not said which, if any, of those technologies correspond to the newly acknowledged orbital weapons.

That distinction matters because a kinetic attack capable of physically destroying another satellite could generate large amounts of orbital debris, threatening civilian and military spacecraft belonging to multiple countries. Non-kinetic systems could instead interfere with sensors, communications or other satellite functions without physically destroying the spacecraft.

The announcement does not by itself mean Washington has violated the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. The treaty prohibits placing nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit but does not impose a blanket prohibition on conventional weapons in space. The Space Force said U.S. operations would comply with international law, including the Outer Space Treaty and the law of armed conflict.

The disclosure nevertheless drew immediate international attention. China urged Washington to stop expanding its military presence in space and warned against turning outer space into a battlefield, while Russia reiterated its position that space should remain free of weapons.

Meink indicated that deterrence was an important reason for publicly revealing the capability while simultaneously arguing that releasing technical details could undermine that objective. The carefully limited disclosure therefore appears designed to inform potential adversaries that the United States possesses operational counterspace capabilities without revealing enough information for them to determine exactly how those systems work.

The acknowledgement also comes as Washington pursues broader military programmes that depend increasingly on space. The Trump administration's planned Golden Dome missile-defence architecture envisages a network that could eventually include space-based interceptors, while the Space Force is expanding satellite constellations and other systems intended to make U.S. military infrastructure in orbit more resilient.

The announcement marks an important change in the strategic debate surrounding space warfare. The question is no longer solely whether the world's major military powers are developing counterspace weapons. Washington has now publicly confirmed that at least some U.S. systems capable of performing a space-control mission are already operating in orbit, while leaving their precise capabilities deliberately classified.
