Nepal buries unidentified flood victims as death toll tops 1,000 and thousands remain missing
KATHMANDU — Nepal has begun burying unidentified victims of last week's catastrophic Himalayan floods in mass graves as the country's confirmed death toll surpassed 1,000, while rescue teams raced against time to find nearly 4,000 people still missing in devastated valleys and mud-filled hydropower tunnels. The scale of the August 26 disaster has overwhelmed morgues and identification facilities, forcing authorities to preserve DNA samples and other identifying information before temporarily burying bodies that families have not yet been able to claim.
Nepal's disaster agency said Tuesday that 1,003 deaths had been confirmed and 3,916 people remained missing, including 583 foreign nationals. Across the border in Tibet, Chinese authorities have reported 16 deaths and 546 missing, including 261 foreigners, putting the combined confirmed death toll at at least 1,019 and the number still unaccounted for above 4,400. With rescuers only now reaching some isolated communities, authorities have warned that the figures could rise further.
The burials have become one of the starkest measures of the disaster's human scale. In Nepal's Chitwan district, nearly 200 kilometres from the devastated valleys of Rasuwa, authorities dug hundreds of graves in the Devghat forest for bodies carried far downstream by the torrent. Many had deteriorated so badly that visual identification was impossible. Authorities collected DNA and identifying information before burial so remains can potentially be matched with relatives later.
Similar scenes were unfolding Tuesday as police buried dozens of unidentified victims in multiple trenches. The process is particularly painful in predominantly Hindu Nepal, where cremation and individualized funeral rites are central to traditional mourning. The emergency burial system is intended to address both the lack of storage capacity and public-health concerns while preserving the possibility that families still searching for relatives may eventually establish an identity through DNA.
The catastrophe began on August 26 high in the Himalayas when a massive glacial and bedrock collapse released ice, rock, water and debris into valleys along the Nepal-Tibet frontier. The resulting surge tore through communities along the Trishuli river system, destroying buildings, bridges, roads and power facilities and carrying bodies and debris far downstream. Scientists examining satellite and seismic data have been studying the precise sequence, while the disaster has renewed concern about the vulnerability of rapidly warming high-altitude Himalayan regions.
Search operations have now increasingly shifted toward Nepal's devastated hydropower sector. Authorities say about 900 workers remain missing from 12 hydropower projects, with roughly 500 believed to have been inside tunnels when the flood struck. Nepalese teams, supported by specialists from China and India, have used excavators, heavy machinery and controlled access operations to penetrate facilities buried beneath enormous deposits of mud and debris. Nearly 300 workers have been rescued from tunnels and project sites, according to the latest Reuters reporting.
The conditions underground are increasingly grim. A drone operator assisting the Nepal Army said some hydropower tunnels were packed with mud so densely that there appeared to be virtually no empty space inside. Thermal drones have been deployed where tunnel geometry permits, but bends and debris limit their range. At the Rasuwagadhi project, a drone was flown deep through one tunnel without detecting signs of life. Some workers were initially able to telephone for help when the disaster struck, but authorities have not confirmed sustained contact with those still missing.
Above ground, helicopters, search dogs and drones are being used to reach communities cut off by destroyed roads and bridges. More than 11,800 people have been rescued in Nepal, while specialized foreign teams have helped establish temporary crossings and gain access to remote areas. In one striking recovery Tuesday, police using a drone discovered 24 bodies inside a single house in Nuwakot district, illustrating how significant casualties may remain hidden in areas rescuers have struggled to reach.
Behind the national numbers are thousands of families navigating an identification system stretched beyond its limits. Reuters documented the case of 21-year-old civil servant Ayush Khadka, whose relatives searched for him for four days after losing contact. His body had actually been recovered on the day of the flood and transported far downstream to Chitwan. A relative eventually recognized him from a photograph of recovered victims using physical features including a mole and a religious protection thread; his family confirmed the identification on August 31 and performed his cremation.
The mass burials therefore represent more than a rising death toll. Bodies have been transported enormous distances from where people disappeared, roads and communications have collapsed, and thousands of families remain uncertain whether relatives are trapped, isolated, hospitalized or among unidentified victims. DNA preservation has effectively become the bridge between emergency burial and the possibility of giving those families an answer months later.
Nearly a week after the disaster, Nepal is simultaneously conducting a rescue operation, a recovery operation and one of the largest victim-identification efforts in its recent history. The survival window for people trapped underground is narrowing while unstable slopes, renewed rainfall and debris continue to threaten rescue personnel. With 3,916 people still officially missing in Nepal, the crossing of the 1,000-death threshold may represent not the end of the accounting but another stage in a disaster whose final human cost remains unknown.
