Millions look skyward as Moon blocks the Sun over Iceland and Spain in mainland Europe’s first total solar eclipse since 1999

Day briefly turned to darkness across parts of Europe on Wednesday as a rare total solar eclipse swept across the northern hemisphere, drawing millions of spectators into streets, fields and viewing sites for one of the year's most anticipated celestial events.

The Moon passed directly between Earth and the Sun on August 12, completely obscuring the solar disk along a narrow path stretching through parts of Russia, Greenland and Iceland before crossing the Atlantic and reaching Spain and a small corner of Portugal.

In Iceland, crowds gathered despite concerns over cloud cover as the Moon's shadow reached the island's western coast. Totality lasted for more than two minutes in some locations, briefly transforming the late-afternoon sky as the Sun's bright surface disappeared behind the Moon.

The spectacle then moved toward Spain, where some of the largest crowds assembled.

Millions of residents and international visitors positioned themselves along the eclipse corridor stretching across northern and eastern parts of the country and toward the Balearic Islands.

As totality arrived, daylight rapidly faded.

Temperatures dropped, the horizon darkened and the Sun's normally invisible outer atmosphere — the corona — emerged around the Moon as a glowing ring.

For observers directly beneath the Moon's shadow, the dramatic transformation lasted only minutes.

For much of the rest of Europe, however, the event appeared as a partial solar eclipse, with the Moon covering varying portions of the Sun.

Spain prepares for millions

The scale of public interest prompted an extraordinary logistical operation in Spain.

Authorities deployed thousands of police officers as huge numbers of people traveled toward rural areas and designated viewing locations along the path of totality.

Officials also faced an additional challenge: extreme summer heat and wildfire risks.

Reuters reported that authorities deployed around 25,000 police and nearly 100 aircraft as officials prepared for enormous crowds while simultaneously monitoring fire danger.

Eclipse glasses became difficult to find in some locations as demand surged ahead of the event.

For many spectators, the moment had been planned years in advance.

Eclipse enthusiasts traveled internationally to position themselves beneath the narrow corridor where the Moon would completely cover the Sun.

A historic eclipse for Europe

The event carried particular significance for European skywatchers.

It was the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 1999.

Spain had waited even longer for an event of this scale. Parts of the country had not experienced totality for more than a century.

Iceland also witnessed an exceptionally rare event: NASA calculations show that another total solar eclipse will not cross the country for generations.

Scientists were watching just as closely as spectators.

NASA deployed aircraft and scientific instruments to study the Sun and Earth's atmosphere during totality, taking advantage of the brief period when the Moon naturally blocks the intensely bright solar surface.

The darkness allows researchers to study the solar corona — the Sun's outer atmosphere — in ways that are extremely difficult under ordinary conditions.

Why does a total eclipse happen?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes almost precisely between Earth and the Sun.

Although the Sun is roughly 400 times wider than the Moon, it is also about 400 times farther from Earth.

That extraordinary coincidence means the two objects can appear almost exactly the same size in Earth's sky.

When their alignment is precise enough, the Moon completely blocks the Sun for observers standing inside a relatively narrow region known as the path of totality.

Outside that corridor, observers see only a partial eclipse.

Wednesday's path crossed remote Arctic territory before reaching Greenland, Iceland and eventually southwestern Europe.

NASA said people across much wider portions of Europe, northern Africa and North America could see at least part of the eclipse.

For the millions who found themselves directly beneath the Moon's shadow, however, the event delivered something considerably rarer:
