ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A civilian aircraft chartered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers crashed while approaching a remote military radar installation in western Alaska, killing all eight people aboard, authorities said, in an accident now under investigation by federal aviation officials.

The twin-engine Cessna 441 Conquest II left Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport on Thursday carrying two pilots and six passengers for Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site, about 450 miles west of Anchorage. The aircraft crashed near its destination at around 12:15 p.m., according to preliminary information released by authorities. Search and rescue teams later confirmed that none of the eight people aboard survived.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had chartered the flight and said two of its employees were among those killed. The aircraft was operated by Alaska-based Security Aviation. Officials had not immediately released the identities of the victims pending notification of their families, while the precise purpose of the passengers' work at Cape Newenham had not been publicly detailed.

The destination gives the accident an unusual federal and military dimension. Cape Newenham is not a conventional commercial airport but an isolated installation supporting a long-range radar site operated within the U.S. military's Alaska surveillance network. The radar system helps track aircraft across Alaska and its approaches, while the airfield provides a vital transportation link for personnel and supplies needed to maintain the isolated facility.

The aircraft was approaching Cape Newenham when it went down, placing investigators' attention on the final phase of the flight. The airfield has a gravel runway in rugged terrain and reporting indicated foggy conditions around the time of the accident, but authorities have not determined that weather, terrain or any mechanical problem caused the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, with the Federal Aviation Administration also involved.

Cape Newenham's isolation illustrates the demanding aviation environment faced by crews operating across western Alaska, where communities and government installations separated by vast distances often depend heavily on aircraft. Security Aviation specializes in charter operations in Alaska and operates aircraft designed to reach destinations where conventional transportation can be extremely limited.

The military connection should not, however, be confused with evidence of a security incident. There was no indication from authorities that the crash involved hostile activity or that the radar site's strategic role was connected to the accident. The aircraft was a civilian-operated charter commissioned by the Army Corps of Engineers rather than a U.S. military aircraft.

That distinction is particularly important because Alaska's radar network plays a role in monitoring air approaches to North America, including areas facing the Russian Far East. The strategic importance of Cape Newenham is verified, but investigators have released no evidence connecting that mission to why the aircraft crashed.

Lt. Gen. Robert Davis, commander of Alaskan Command, expressed condolences over the deaths and described those aboard as professionals carrying out an important mission in a difficult operating environment. The loss also underscores a less visible part of maintaining America's remote defence infrastructure: military radar installations depend on civilian pilots, engineers, contractors and other personnel routinely travelling to locations far removed from major population centres.

Federal investigators will now examine the wreckage, aircraft maintenance history, pilot records, weather and available flight data to reconstruct what happened during the approach. A final determination of probable cause could take considerably longer, and officials have cautioned against drawing conclusions before that work is completed.

For now, the clearest picture is also the most consequential: a civilian aircraft chartered by a federal agency was carrying personnel to one of America's remote Alaska radar installations when it crashed near the end of its journey, killing every person aboard. What caused the aircraft to go down remains unanswered.
