House Republicans push $95 billion package to fund Iran war and Trump's priorities

By Masyin Woodbridge I SCN

WASHINGTON — House Republicans are pressing ahead with a $95 billion budget package aimed at funding the war in Iran and advancing several of President Donald Trump's top domestic priorities, despite opposition from Democrats and uncertainty over its prospects in the Senate.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and Republican leaders plan to use the budget reconciliation process to move the proposal through the narrowly divided House with Republican votes alone. The package is designed to provide additional funding for military operations while also addressing key White House policy goals ahead of the midterm elections.

The proposal includes approximately $60 billion for the Pentagon to support military operations related to the conflict with Iran, $13 billion for other national security programs, $12 billion in assistance for American farmers affected by tariff-related losses, and $10 billion linked to election and voter registration measures, including the Republican-backed SAVE America Act requiring proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.

Republicans argue the legislation is necessary to ensure the military has the resources needed to continue operations in the Middle East while delivering on promises made by President Trump.

"We are rallying to finish what we started," House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington said as Republicans defended the proposal during debate. Supporters say much of the defense funding would cover ammunition, operational costs and military readiness rather than launching new military campaigns.

Democrats strongly oppose the package, arguing Congress should prioritize domestic programs instead of expanding military spending. Many have also questioned the administration's handling of the Iran conflict, saying lawmakers have not received sufficient information about the long-term strategy or expected costs.

The funding debate comes as the Pentagon says the war in Iran has already cost the United States about $37.5 billion, with additional funding needed to maintain military operations through the remainder of the fiscal year.

While House Republican leaders are optimistic about passing the bill, its future remains uncertain. Senate Republicans have shown greater interest in avoiding a government shutdown than taking up another large reconciliation package, making the proposal's path to becoming law unclear.

Why it matters

The package combines emergency war funding with several major domestic policy priorities, making it one of the most politically significant spending proposals of Trump's second term.

Its outcome could shape both the administration's ability to finance military operations in Iran and the broader political debate over federal spending as lawmakers head toward the midterm elections.

What happens next

House Republican leaders are expected to seek a floor vote in the coming days. If approved by the House, the legislation would move to the Senate, where lawmakers are expected to closely scrutinize both the military funding request and the broader spending provisions.

Most Unique Fact

Rather than proposing a stand-alone military funding bill, House Republicans combined Iran war funding, farm assistance and Trump's election policy priorities into a single $95 billion reconciliation package, allowing it to move through the House with a simple majority if Republicans remain united.
