Extreme Heat Forces Temporary Closure of Great American State Fair Ahead of Fourth of July Celebrations

WASHINGTON, D.C.: The Great American State Fair on the National Mall was temporarily closed Friday after extreme heat and humidity created unsafe conditions for visitors, organizers, volunteers and staff.

Freedom 250 organizers announced the fair would remain closed until 5:00 p.m. local time, saying public safety was their top priority as the U.S. National Weather Service warned of dangerously high temperatures and heat index values reaching as high as 115°F (46°C) in the Washington region.

Emergency officials expanded cooling measures across the venue, including additional water stations, shade areas and medical support for attendees. Reports indicated that several visitors required treatment for heat-related illnesses during the afternoon.

Despite the temporary shutdown, organizers said evening events, including the annual A Capitol Fourth concert, were still expected to proceed with revised entry times to reduce prolonged exposure to the extreme heat. Officials also urged visitors to stay hydrated, wear light clothing and limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.

The temporary closure comes as millions of Americans prepare for Independence Day celebrations, while much of the eastern United States remains under extreme heat warnings.
