Chris Brown Pleads Guilty to Affray Over London Nightclub Confrontation

By Sara Sultan I SCN

LONDON — American R&B singer Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to affray in connection with a confrontation at an exclusive London nightclub, bringing an end to a planned trial over the February 2023 incident.

The 37-year-old entered the guilty plea at Southwark Crown Court on Friday alongside his co-defendant, US musician and vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu. Both men are due to be sentenced on 26 October 2026.

Brown had previously denied more serious allegations involving music producer Abraham Diaw, including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Following the affray pleas, prosecutors said they would not continue with the remaining assault charges, meaning the scheduled criminal trial will no longer take place.

What allegedly happened at the nightclub?

The case relates to an incident at Tape nightclub in London’s Mayfair district in February 2023.

Prosecutors had alleged that Brown struck Diaw over the head with a tequila bottle during what they described as an unprovoked attack. They also alleged that Brown punched and kicked Diaw during the confrontation.

The incident was reportedly captured by the nightclub’s surveillance cameras and occurred in front of other people inside the venue. Brown had denied the assault allegations before changing his plea on the separate affray charge.

What does affray mean?

Under English criminal law, affray involves using or threatening unlawful violence in a way that would cause a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for their personal safety.

Unlike an assault charge focused primarily on injuries allegedly caused to a particular victim, an affray charge concerns violent conduct and the wider fear or danger it creates in a public or private setting.

Affray can carry a maximum sentence of three years in prison when dealt with at a crown court, although the sentence imposed depends on factors including the seriousness of the violence, culpability, injuries, previous convictions and any credit awarded for a guilty plea.

More serious charges dropped

Brown had faced allegations of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possessing a bottle as an offensive weapon.

However, after Brown and Akinlolu admitted affray, prosecutors confirmed that they would offer no evidence on the other counts.

The guilty plea does not amount to a conviction for the separate grievous bodily harm or actual bodily harm allegations, which Brown continued to deny. Those charges will not now proceed to trial.

Arrested after returning to Britain

Brown was arrested in Manchester in May 2025 after travelling to the United Kingdom for the first time since the nightclub incident.

He was initially remanded in custody but was later released after lodging a £5 million security payment, allowing him to continue his international tour while the criminal case remained pending.

His bail arrangements attracted considerable attention because the singer was permitted to travel for performances while remaining required to return for court proceedings.

Brown left Southwark Crown Court following Friday’s hearing as supporters gathered outside, with some fans cheering and seeking autographs.

Co-defendant also admits affray

Akinlolu, who is also known professionally as HoodyBaby, pleaded guilty to the same affray charge.

The two men had been scheduled to stand trial together in October. Their guilty pleas now mean the court will instead move directly to sentencing.

The judge will consider the facts accepted by the defendants, submissions from prosecutors and defence lawyers, and any dispute over the precise circumstances of the confrontation before deciding the appropriate punishment.

Brown awaits October sentencing

Brown remains on bail until sentencing on 26 October.

The court could impose an immediate custodial sentence, a suspended sentence, a community-based penalty or another punishment permitted under English law. No final sentence has yet been determined.

The case has generated international attention because of Brown’s global celebrity status and the seriousness of the allegations initially brought against him.

Despite those original accusations, the conviction before the court is specifically for affray. Reporting should therefore distinguish between the charge Brown admitted and the separate assault allegations that prosecutors have now dropped.

Most Unique Fact

Brown’s guilty plea removed the need for a full trial that had been scheduled to begin on the same date he will now return to court for sentencing: 26 October 2026.a
