Trump warns US could impose Strait of Hormuz tolls if Iran deal collapses after 60 days

President Donald Trump has warned that the United States could consider imposing charges on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz if ongoing negotiations with Iran fail to produce a final agreement within the current 60-day window. The warning comes as US and Iranian negotiators prepare for high-stakes talks in Switzerland aimed at turning a temporary ceasefire arrangement into a broader long-term deal.

Trump clarified on Friday that the Strait of Hormuz will remain open and toll-free during the current 60-day interim agreement. However, he said a future toll system could be considered if peace talks break down, arguing that the United States has played a major role in securing navigation and stability in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important energy chokepoints, carrying a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports. Markets have closely watched developments after months of conflict disrupted shipping and pushed energy prices higher.

The issue has become increasingly sensitive because Iranian officials have also discussed the possibility of future transit fees or service charges after the 60-day period expires. Those comments have raised concerns among Gulf states and global shipping companies about the long-term future of navigation through the waterway.

Despite the warnings, both Washington and Tehran are continuing negotiations. US Vice President JD Vance recently confirmed that the 60-day negotiation period officially began this week, with both sides seeking a broader settlement covering regional security, sanctions, and the future administration of the Strait of Hormuz
