Woman Killed, 1,700 Evacuated After Massive Fire Engulfs Dominican Republic Beach Resort

BAYAHIBE, Dominican Republic — A devastating fire swept through a popular beachfront resort in the Dominican Republic, killing one woman and forcing the evacuation of nearly 1,700 tourists, visitors, and hotel staff. The incident occurred at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel in Bayahibe, one of the Caribbean nation's most visited tourist destinations.

Authorities identified the victim as Francesca Valentino, a 46-year-old Italian tourist. Emergency officials said three people were hospitalized and six others received treatment at the scene, including guests and first responders.

Videos shared by local media showed thick black smoke rising over the Caribbean coastline as flames tore through parts of the resort's straw and palm-thatched roofing. Dominican emergency officials said preliminary findings indicate that highly flammable palm roof materials and strong winds helped the fire spread rapidly across the property.

Firefighters eventually brought the blaze under control, but investigators are still working to determine the exact cause. Guests were relocated to nearby accommodations, while a neighboring sister property, the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace, was not damaged.

Officials stressed that tourism operations in Bayahibe remain unaffected despite the tragedy. The Dominican Republic remains the Caribbean's leading tourism destination, attracting more than 5.6 million visitors during the first five months of 2026 alone.
