Battle for 2028 Begins Early Inside Democratic Party Over Key Primary State

Five Democratic Party chairs from Southern states are now pushing for South Carolina to remain the first contest on the 2028 presidential primary calendar, arguing the state better reflects the party’s core voter base and political future.
The move is reigniting tensions inside the Democratic Party over which states should have the power to shape presidential races before the rest of the country votes.
Supporters say South Carolina helped rescue President Joe Biden’s struggling 2020 campaign and proved that Black voters and Southern Democrats remain central to the party’s national coalition. Critics, however, argue the system still gives too much influence to a small number of early-voting states.
The debate could become one of the earliest power struggles of the post-Biden political era as Democrats quietly prepare for what may become a crowded and deeply competitive 2028 White House race.
Political strategists say the order of early primary states can dramatically shape momentum, fundraising, media coverage, and even decide which candidates survive long enough to become serious contenders.
The push from Southern Democratic leaders also signals growing concern inside the party about maintaining support among Black voters, moderates, and Southern swing-state coalitions as Republicans intensify efforts to regain momentum nationwide.
