The United States Senate parliamentarian has rejected a controversial $1 billion security funding provision tied partly to President Donald Trump’s planned White House ballroom project from the Republican reconciliation package.

Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough ruled the proposal violated reconciliation rules, meaning it would require 60 Senate votes instead of a simple majority.

The disputed funding included:

  • $220 million for White House security upgrades linked to the ballroom project
  • $180 million for a visitor screening center
  • $600 million for Secret Service protection, counter-drone systems, and security training

Some Republican senators questioned the administration’s request, saying more details were needed before approving taxpayer funding connected to a project Trump previously described as privately financed.

Senate Republicans say they will attempt to revise the legislation to meet Senate rules, while Democrats have vowed to challenge any rewritten version.
